Obituary:

Willis Elbridge Jewett, 80, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Community Hospice House in Merrimack after a brief illness.

He was born in Milford on July 18, 1929, a son of the late Willis Elbridge Sr. and Jennie (Brooks) Jewett. In 1948 he graduated from Milford High School. He was the husband of Marilyn P. “Pat” (Gordon) Jewett.

Willis was a highly decorated veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served 27 years, which included tours in both Vietnam and Korea. He had served aboard the USS Ammen, USS Grand Canyon, and USS Chicago. During his Military career he was a Master Chief Petty Officer, Ship Fitter as well as a Recruiting Officer in Manchester. After his retirement, he volunteered at the Veteran’s Hospital in Manchester. Following his military career he retired from GTE Sylvania as well.

Willis was very active in his community. In his younger years he was a Den Leader with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He was a 21-year member of the Litchfield Planning Board, Co-leader of the Youth Group at Litchfield Community Church, and was recently Litchfield Citizen of the Year. He participated in Town Clean Up Day, Assembling Voting Booths, Veterans Events including the yearly wreath laying ceremony on the Merrimack River, as well as being instrumental in development of town recreation. He was also a member of VFW Post 5791 in Hudson, the Litchfield Lions Club, and the Fleet Reserves Association.

Willis will always be remembered for the kind, gentle person that he was. Even in his free time he was always helping people. He also enjoyed watching stock car racing.

Along with his loving wife, Marilyn P. “Pat” Jewett, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Keith A. Jewett and wife Teresa of Hudson; a daughter, Karen Ragle of Hampton; two step-children and their spouses, John W. Burns and wife Sandy of Virginia Beach, VA, and Nancy P. Morey and husband John of Merrimack; five grandchildren, Cameron Jewett and Shannon Jewett of Hudson, Benjamin Burns and Brian Burns of Virginia Beach, VA, and Devin Morey of Merrimack; and one great-grandchild, Emmett Burns.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Willis’s name to Dartmouth-Hitchcock, Norris Cotton Cancer Center, One Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03756 or New Hampshire Veterans Home, 139 Winter Street, Tilton, NH 03276-5415.



Visitation:

Memorial Visitation will be Monday, March 8, 2010 from 4 – 7 PM at DAVIS FUNERAL HOME, One Lock Street in Nashua.



Service:

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, March 9, 2010, 2 PM, at Litchfield Community Church, 259 Charles Bancroft Hwy, Litchfield. Friends are invited to attend.



Cemetery:

Interment will be private.
