Birth Date: 05/09/1939
Death Date: 03/05/2013

Jessica  Ann (Jan) Austin Squires, 73, passed away on March 5th, 2013, surrounded by the warmth and love of her family.  Jan was born on May 9, 1939, the second child of Reverend Eugene and Genevieve Austin, in Canandaigua, New York.  She is predeceased by her brother, John Evans Austin, and both parents.

In 1960, Jan was married to James W. Squires, M.D., and after several stops along the way, Jan and Jim settled in Hollis in 1971 where they have been active members of the community ever since.  Jan and Jim raised their four children in Hollis, all of whom attended the local public schools, something Jan was very proud of.

Jan is survived by her husband, James W. Squires, M.D, and four children and spouses, James Squires and Karen Jones Squires, of Norfolk, VA, Anne and Louis Scarano of McLean, VA, Martha and Lt. Col. William Hummer, of Fairfax, VA and Marc and Jennifer Squires of Hollis, NH.  Jan loved and adored her 10 grandchildren, Domenic, Jimmy, Kathleen, Eleanor, Margaret, Luke, Jessica, Genevieve, Owen, and Samuel.

Jan was involved in numerous organizations including Beaver Brook Association, the Friends of the Hollis Social Library, the Hollis School District and the Hollis Congregational Church.  She also served for many years as an elected Supervisor of the Checklist.  Jan loved her summer home on Lake Sunapee in New London, New Hampshire.  A daily swim was her idea of heaven.  She also enjoyed playing cards, reading, listening to music, and spending time with her many close friends.  Jan’s enthusiasm, positive spirit and belief that each day is a precious gift enriched the lives of all those around her.

SERVICES: A Celebration of Life will be held at the Congregational Church, 11 Church Street, Amherst, New Hampshire, at 3:00 on Saturday, March 9th.  A reception will immediately follow at the church.  In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Friends of the Hollis Social Library, PO Box 659, Hollis, New Hampshire, 03049.

    To Jan’s family….

I just got word of Jan’s passing and am holding all of you in the light.
Jan loved you so much! In reading the entries here I see she was love personified in her community.

I met Jan as a freshman at UNH. I was delighted to have her as a friend and to know someone as short as I was who was generous in sharing clothes! We lost touch over time, but shared a lot (not only clothes!) early on. I loved her very much and and grateful she was a part of my life.

    Blessings,

    Sally Orcutt Page

    Dear Martha (and family),

I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your mom. As has been said below, she really did bring “sunshine to everyone’s world”. Absolutely. What I recall of our school years was that she was always helping out and always around, either volunteering at lunch, at school events, the library, games, plays- you name it. She always made me (and so many other kids i am sure) feel special and seen. My memory of her was that she always had a friendly bright smile and kind word for us all. She was a treasure of the town and will be missed.

    With much sympathy,
    Anna Birch

  • Denise M. Vocell says:

    Dear Dr. Jim,
I was saddened to read about Jan. I was blessed to care for you and your family while working with Dr. Clark.
Jan and I had many wonderful visits and laughs together.
I especially cherish her gift of beach shells from a vacation when she wrestled the shell from a seagull. She told me that you’d chastise her for that
but she & I had a good laugh. I admired her strength and spirit and will always think fondly of her .

I hope your love will comfort you and your family in the future .

    Sincerely yours,

    Denise M. Vocell

I loved that the obituary mentioned how much she enjoyed playing cards, because that is my memory of her – all of us sitting around the table that Marc built and playing hearts. We spent a lot of time also playing cribbage by your pool! My thoughts are with you and your family.

    Dear Jim and Family,

Jack and I are heartsick to hear of Jan’s passing. We have known you both for almost forty years since you first came to Hollis and remember when you lived on Dow Road. Jan and I were part of a play group then when Martha and Peter were little, and of course we still remember Jan’s mother. We are so glad to have bumped into you on the cruise this past summer. Little did we know that it would be our special last time with Jan.

Our hearts go out to you and the family. We are in Florida and unfortunately will be unable to attend Jan’s service, but when we return to Hollis we would like to get together with you. We are still close friends with the Berriens, so the next time they come to Hollis, we will call you.

    Fondly, Lori and Jack Law
